As a result, some importers are looking at other countries for their requirements. In fact, about 30 per cent of Indian exports this year have been lost to Mexico and Brazil.

Indian exporters, manufacturers and fruit brokers must all have a hard look at the present scenario and take immediate corrective measures.

The impetus to growth of the processing industry is hampered due to the following:

• A lack of actual crop data and realistic estimates of fruit availability.
• Too many processing units with small and medium units competing to buy the fruits at the same time.
• Fruit brokers taking advantage of seasonal situations.
• Closed auction of fruits with not enough transparency.
• Farmers caught in debt traps.
• Absence of co-operative movement.
• Absolute indifference of agricultural marketing department.
• Tendency of farmer to sell crop when it comes for flowering or at the time of fruiting.
• Reluctance of farmer to sell the fruit directly to processing factories.
