offers a peek into EAN India's suggestions on polishing up the recent
Draft Food Policy and Standards and Safety Bill 2005
The
recent controversy surrounding the cancer-causing Sudan 1 colourant
has highlighted the importance of traceability standards in the supply
chain. More than the monetary loss, it is a dent to 'Brand India' that
is unnerving. It is high time that our country needs to take corrective
measures to prevent such crises in future - a huge responsibility on
the organisations like EAN India. An affiliate of EAN International
(Belgium), EAN India is a non-profit organisation promoted by the Ministry
of Commerce and the Government of India, which aims at educating the
Indian industry on use of the EAN.UCC numbering system for unique identification
of products / services and locations. Coming back to the issue of adopting
measures for food products to adhere to international standards, EAN
India has suggested some recommendations that should be added for improvising
the Draft Food Policy and the Standards and the Safety Bill 2005. EAN
India's recommends the following additions in the Draft Food Policy
clauses
(a) Supply chain and post harvest issues"The Supply Chain
should facilitate end-toend product track and trace stock visibility
at all points and wastage control through adoption of practices like
bar coding and global identification standards."
(b) Food Safety and Hygiene
"Food safety should facilitate traceability
teamed with accurate and speedy food recalls,
whenever the need arises."
(c) Export
"For continued market access, exporters should pro-actively
comply with International regulations like the EU Food Law No.178/2002,
US Bioterrorism Act etc., and implement guidelines on food safety, product
identification and traceability as endorsed and followed by International
Retailers and food producers."
(d) Constraints and strategies - sectoral issue
"Traceability is very important for ensuring consumer health
and conformance to Regulatory and International requirements. It is
required across all food sectors and established International guidelines
