India attends rice forum in Hanoi
[ SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2003 03:31:25 AM ]

NEW DELHI: India, which recently became a member of the World Rice Commerce forum, is attending, for the first time, the two day conference of rice producing nations which started yesterday in Hanoi.

China, Pakistan, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, the US, and Vietnam are also members of the conference, at which over 150 delegates from different countries are discussing the state of the rice trade industry. Primarily, the forum’s rice trade outlook projections for the next two years is considered significant.

India’s membership became crucial after it beat host nation Vietnam’s rice export record, albeit having subsidised export rice heavily. Last year, Vietnam exported 3.2 million tonne. India’s food ministry has estimated that the country will be able to sustain exports on a large scale making India the second largest rice exporter and eighth largest wheat exporter in the world. Organisers of the conference say the forum aims at exchange of newer trade practices and demands, recent rice research, discussing shipping, insurance and legal issues affecting the industry and meeting trade partners. Sectoral reports are given importance. Earlier known as the Asia International Rice Conference, World Rice Commerce began in ’96, with Singapore hosting the inaugural event. Since then, Bangkok, Phuket, Cebu and Langkawi have hosted the annual meet. In ’02, it took place in Beijing, where it was renamed World Rice Commerce. This year’s event is coorganized by the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency, the Vietnam Food Association and Singapore-based IBC Asia Ltd.
