A drink to health

Tulika Banerjee in conversation with Mulki Y Verma, Executive Vice President, Godrej Foods Division, explains the technology used for Sofit Soymilk

The perception of consumers today is undergoing a change and the demand for health foods is increasing. The market for health foods in India is at a nascent stage but offers huge potential and tremendous scope for growth. A number of companies are introducing new products in this category. In this issue, we focus on the recent introduction by Godrej, one of the leaders in the food processing industry. Mulki Y Verma, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, food division, Godrej Industries, in conversation with Tulika Banerjee, elaborates on Sofit Soymilk and the technology, equipment and other related issues involved in its processing and marketing in the country.

Could you elaborate on the demand for health foods in India? As more and more people in the country are getting health conscious, what do you think of the trends in diet foods ?
There has been a significant increase in the fitness-conscious segment in the population in the recent past leading to increased awareness as well as consumption of health-related products. The awareness has grown in such a way that people today don’t mind spending a good amount of money on buying international products that are being advertised these days.
There are a number of health foods that complement the regular diet intake, provide nourishment to the body and fight diseases. They can be in the form of soya foods, herbs, cereals, fruits, vegetables, health drinks, medicines or any other blend of natural ingredients. Soya, with its inherent properties, has become an automatic choice for this segment. Being natural and free from causing any kind of side affects, the benefits of soya have been proven over time and are hence credible. However, the taste of soya was the single biggest barrier to the growth of demand of soya milk in the country. But with technological advances, it has been possible to mask the beany taste and aroma of soya milk which is ususally disliked by many people.

How did Godrej exploit this growing market of health foods in the country?
Godrej has recently launched Sofit Soymilk, a ready-to-drink soya milk in the category of health foods to give our consumers all the benefits of soya coupled with the taste of fruits. Sofit soymilk includes a range of energising soya milk made from carefullyselected soya beans and fruits. As of now, it is available in four flavours: mango, apple, malt and plain. The milk is packaged in hygienic and convenient tetra packs of 200 ml with straws and 1,000 ml carry-home packs with a flip top. We have designed our product in an easyto- carry pack after keeping the changing lifestyles of people in mind.

Where has Godrej set up the processing units for health foods in the country? Are you planning to set up more such processing units in the near future?
Godrej Sofit Soymilk is manufactured at the manufacturing, research and development centre of Godrej at Mandideep near Bhopal.
