M Shobita Rao, SR Kanatt, Dr Ramesh Chander and Dr Arun Sharma explain what makes radiation processed chitosan a novel food preservative

Bhagat International Pvt Ltd, a part of the Bhagat group, commenced operations in 1977 with the manufacturing of Menthol Crystals and its allied products. However, over a due course of time and in response to a growing demand, the company ventured into new territories as well. Presently, it is successfully marketing its latest products like food colours and flavouring powders. Bhagat International has tried to take natural flavours and colours - gifted to us by nature - to people, while retaining their natural quality. The company's food colours are being marketed successfully in several food and pharmaceutical industries. Both synthetic as well as natural colours are produced by Bhagat International to meet individual requirements as per the products. The synthetic food colours are manufactured chemically and are the most commonly used dyes in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. This includes primary, blended and lake colours. For usage in natural products like the herbal products, the company's natural colours have been very well appreciated and accepted in the market. They are obtained from vegetables, fruits, seeds, algae and insects. The company’s natural food colour range includes Annatto, Beetroot Red, Paprika, Curcumin, Caramel, Chlorophyll, Anthocyanin and many others. Besides, its flavouring powders are designed and prepared specially to excite the taste buds of snack food loving people as they find major application for seasoning the snack products. These natural powders are extracted from their respective fruit/vegetable/condiment and then spray dried and stored under vaccum conditions. Untouched by synthetic or chemical preservatives of any kind, they are much more beneficial than other conventional products (Dehydrates/Pulps) because of their higher strength, better mouth feel, no breakage and leakage, minimal storing cost, economical transportation cost and low end product costing. Bhagat International's range of condiment powders includes garlic, onion, green chilly, lemon, ginger etc., whereas fruit powders include mango, pineapple, orange, banana, chikoo, strawberry and others. Likewise, the vegetable powders include tomato, beet juice, spinach, carrot and so on. All the above mentioned food colours and flavouring powders find large application in the dairy industry, bakery industry, confectionery industry, snacks industry, ketchup manufacturing industry, pharma industry, cosmetic sector and feed industry.
