Aseptic technology provides a solution to dairies with surplus milk to market their produce over larger geographical areas

The six layers in an aseptic package
The Six Layers in an Aseptic Package

As the freezing process puts severe strain on the dough, the Aseptic processing is the second biggest breakthrough in the field of food processing since pasteurisation, and aseptic packaging offers benefits no other kind of packaging does. Together, the aseptic processing and packaging of liquid foods has been considered the most important food science advancement of the 20th century by the reputed Institute of Food Technologists in 1960.

Early pioneering companies like Swedish major Tetra Pak (pioneers in the field of Aseptic processing and packaging) very quickly realised market needs of providing a total range of processing and packaging solutions under one roof. Tetra Pak has concentrated on this core competence and is today a single-source supplier – from customised process equipment for dairy and dairy products, beverages (including fruit juices, still drinks and carbonated soft drinks) and prepared foods – to complete processing and packaging plants. In addition, Tetra Pak plays the role of the Informed Business Partner to the industry, by value adding through marketing and technical “software” support. This makes Tetra Pak a company that provides “more than the package and gives it a true edge over competition.

The pasteurised plastic pouch (PPP) has been a major packaging medium for liquid milk in the developing countries. The lack of a continuous cold chain and also the prohibitive costs of having one result in a broken cold chain for the PPP in most developing countries. Add to that the problem of adulteration and the consumer in these countries is not in a position to get access to good quality milk. The Tetra Fino Aseptic, which is an aseptic pouch shaped package, provides the consumers in these countries access to safe, hygienic, good quality and nutritional milk at an affordable price. The TFA system draws on the expertise and experience of global leaders Tetra Pak to develop a system for emerging markets such as India.

The 3 Pillars to Aseptic Technology

The key to introduction of an Aseptic Technology in most developing countries are a low cost entry in terms of investment and also providing an affordable cost in terms of operations. The Tetra Fino Aseptic System is designed keeping in view these two key aspects. The system consists of three components :

  • The Processing System - The Tetra Therm Aseptic Primo Steriliser
  • The Filling machine - The Tetra Fino Aseptic Filling machine
  • The Package - The Tetra Fino Aseptic (TFA) Package

The Package

The package is a six-layer aseptic packaging, which is shaped like the conventional pouch. The six layers from outside are -

  • Polyethylene: Provide moisture protection and print protection
  • Paper Board: Provide printing for the package and also sturdiness
  • Polyethylene: Bonding layer between paper and aluminum foil
  • Aluminum Foil: Key barrier layer provides barrier to oxygen, light, microorganisms, odours and flavours. The layer also helps in inductions sealing of the package.
  • Polyethylene: Bonding layer between aluminum foil and inner layer
  • Polyethylene: Seals the liquid inside provides the sealing of the package. The layer is compatible with the liquid to be packed.

The package has the possibility of a five colour flexographic printing which provides the possibility having an consumer appealing package design. The use of paper within the package gives the package a better hand feel and acts as a strong differentiation to the pouch. The packaging cost is 30% lower than conventional carton packages.

The distribution of the TFA packages can be done in two fashions based on the prevailing distribution logistics and also the target consumer group:

  • Conventional plastic crates
  • One-way cardboard boxes
