Global
Dye
scare leads to food recall
According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), as many as
43 more products have been recalled as a result of the Sudan I contamination
scare, increasing the total figure to 580. Presently, the agency and
local authorities are investigating firms allegedly involved in supplying
them. It may be noted that Sudan I dye was in chilli powders used by
Premier Foods to make Worcester sauce as well as other food items. This
illegal dye has shown to cause cancer in mice, but the risk to humans
is extremely low. Statistics suggest that the recall of these products
is the biggest in British history and estimated to cost about£100
million involving soups, sauces, crisps and ready-to-eat meals. According
to David Statham, FSA director of enforcement, though the risk of this
dye to human health is very small, consumers should not have been exposed
to contaminated products. "As such, we are working with the local
authorities and considering appropriate enforcement action," he
added.
Food firms now would need to show healthiest
options
Food companies in UK would
be now given 18 months to introduce a "traffic lights" system
of labeling to help families identify healthy eating options, barring
which they would face legislation. Accordingly, a timetable enforcing
implementation of the White Paper on public health will be announced
soon. This would include the plan for clearer food labeling, a ban on
smoking in most pubs and curbs on junk food advertising on television.
