Kabul takes initiative to
prevent fruit exports decay
In a bid to keep its fruit exports fresh
during transit, Afghanistan has
proposed an agreement to
Pakistan on fruit exports via airconditioned
containers. But
this failed to generate
satisfactory response from
the neighbouring
country, according to
Mohammad Azeem
Wardak, Director,
Foreign Trade Wing,
Ministry of Commerce.
Being sceptical of Pakistan's reaction,
Mr Wardak added that their neighbouring
country though always signed agreements,
did not bother to follow the rules
mentioned in them. He further pointed
out that Pakistan is trying to impose duties
on Afghanistan's fruit exports, or purchase
them at cheaper rates and later export
them to other countries under its own
brand name.
Several factors including a lengthy and
uneven route, security checks and
scorching heat has been reportedly
upsetting Afghanistan's fruit exports to
Pakistan and other countries.
It is believed that more than
10 per cent of the country’s fresh
and dry fruits rot due to improper
shipment arrangements.
Dairy farm to source milk from SA
Dairy company
Warrnambool
Cheese and Butter is
initiating talks for
sourcing milk from
Meningie in South
Australia and SA's
Fleurieu Peninsula.
According to John
McLean, MD,
Warrnambool
Cheese and Butter, the move is in direct response to
approaches from farmers in these regions. He further
confirmed that additional volumes purchased could
be as high as 100 million litres. "Our current supply region goes through to
probably Millicent and we believe always have
maintained a strong and productive presence in the
Mount [Gambier] region, and so we were pleased to
respond to this invitation from dairy farmers in
adjacent regions," he said. The South Australian Dairy
Farmers Association have welcomed this move, which
is likely to offer more market power to the suppliers.
