has taken initiatives to set up food parks for promoting the food processing
industry in Kerala. K N Srikumar, KINFRA provides an overview
The
Government of India has accorded priority status to accelerate the growth
of the food processing sector. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries
(MFPI) has announced various schemes of assistance under the Tenth five-year
plan for the development of the processed food industry. The ministry
has appointed State Nodal Agencies (SNAs) across the country to implement
the schemes of the ministry and undertake overall development of the
food processing sector in the respective states. The Principal Secretary
II (Industries) is the nodal officer and Kerala Industrial Infrastructure
Development Corporation (KINFRA) is the nodal agency slated to liaison
with MFPI for the promotion and development of food processing industries
in Kerala. In order to attract investment to this sector, the Kerala
government has initiated various developmental programmes in the state,
especially in the creation of industrial infrastructure for food processing.
In this regard, KINFRA has set up a state-of-the-art infrastructure
at the KINFRA food processing park at Kakkancherry, Malappuram district
and it has won national acclaim for being the most successful food park
in the country. KINFRA has also developed other infrastructure facilities
like a Food Zone at Mazhuvannur (Ernakulam) and a primary processing
centre and cold storage facility at Kalpetta (Wayanad). The infrastructure
has been developed with financial assistance from the MFPI. Taking cue
from the success and response elicited by these developments, KINFRA
also proposes to set up additional
Food Parks at Pathanamthitta and Ernakulam
districts. On their part, the state government
has also initiated measures to develop specific
brands of Kerala Food with a view to
promoting this sector.
