Tetra
Pak launches filler for emerging beverage markets
Tetra Pak has launched what it describes as a low investment carton
packaging solution ideal for manufacturers looking to penetrate the
lucrative new chilled beverage markets. It claims that the compact Tetra
Rex TR/22 filling machine is particularly suited and apt for operating
in new categories such as soy-based drinks or probiotic drinking yoghurt
packaging. According to a recent Frost and Sullivan report, Probiotics
are an increasingly popular addition to mainstream foods and are set
to more than triple in value in Europe to reach $137.9 million (€118.5
million) by 2010. Probiotic drinking yoghurt has been the fastest growing
dairy product in the last five years. Market research by Euromonitor
shows that probiotic little bottles have grown by 52 per
cent this year, reaching a retail sales value of €28 million, the
highest growth in the core European markets. Tetra Pak argues that the
TR/22 can help manufacturers penetrate these growing markets in a cost-effective
way. It claims that the hygiene standard, efficiency and performance
of the filling machine are almost at par with larger gable top filling
machines, while the compact size of the TR/22 makes it easy to accommodate
in small production facilities. The TR/22 can be used by larger dairy
or beverage producers that do not have the filling capacity to introduce
new products in the market in Tetra Rex cartons.
Huhtamaki launches singleuse biodegradable
packaging
Finnish packaging giant Huhtamaki has launched a
complete range of single-use cold drink cups, plates, containers and
cutlery based on renewable raw materials. The company claims to be the
first to manufacture and commercialise this particular type of packaging.
After use, all products in the BioWare line can be returned to the earth
through composting.BioWare is a commitment to the future and offers
uncompromised performance with a lower environmental impact, said
Timo Tiilikainen, Marketing and Development Manager, Foodservice Europe
in Huhtamaki. With this range, Huhtamaki wants to help the foodservice
operators to enhance their environmental image as well as offer an interesting
option also for waste handling , he added. BioWare disposables
are available across Europe for beverage companies, breweries and foodservice
retailers. No compromises are made on the quality of the products;
the beer and water cups are of high clarity and the plates sturdy and
durable. All products can be customised to suit various events and operators,
said Tiilikainen. Huhtamakis cold drink cups are made from a corn-based
resin called NatureWorks. The material is fully natural, made from annually
renewable resources and certified for compostability and performs equal
to or better than traditional resins. Interest for environmentally
sound tableware has already been visible in the market, and now we have
a solid supply of suitable raw materials available. We took the opportunity
and built up a complete range, which we will continue to develop further,
said Mr Tiilikainen. Compostable products are increasing in popularity.
Alken Maes for example, the second largest Belgian brewery, successfully
used the BioWare beer cups in the summer festivals in 2004 after which
the cups were composted. We are excited to see the wide variety
of applications NatureWorks PLA can have in the foodservice industry,
said Lisa Owen, Global Business Leader, Rigid Packaging, Cargill Dow.
Tetra Prisma - the future of wine packaging
A US wine maker is packaging its Vendange product
in 500ml Tetra Prisma containers, in a bid to break out of the confines
of traditional wine packaging. Having introduced the first sangria in
Tetra Prisma containers earlier this year, the company, Canandaigua
Wine, is now the first to offer a range of wines in the innovative new
package. In fact, four Vendange wines are being released nationally
in Tetra Prisma containers this month. The Tetra Prisma container is
shatterproof and features new screw cap technology called StreamCap.
This technology is tamper proof and allows the container to be resealed
once it has been opened. Tetra Pak claims that the package protects
the integrity of its sensitive contents, while making Vendange wines
portable and easier to store. The octagonal-shaped container holds threeplus
glasses of wine, and is designed to appeal to the current lifestyle
trends of onthe- go consumers. Canandaigua says that ...
